About Dr. Michael Byrne

Dr. Byrne is a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at Vancouver General Hospital/University of British Columbia where he is also the Director of the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship. Prior to this role, Dr. Byrne was an attending physician at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina.

He is very experienced (over 20 years) in all aspects of the medico-legal needs in Gastroenterology, acting for plaintiff and defense, and has appeared in court on numerous occasions as an expert witness. He has provided medico-legal services in Canada and internationally.

His research interests range from basic science to clinical medicine, and he has hands-on research training in molecular science and pharmacology. He has practiced in the UK, Australia, Ireland, US, and Canada.

He is very widely published in the GI space with over 150 peer-reviewed papers, and is one of the leading experts globally in the application of Artificial Intelligence to Gastroenterology. He recently served as lead editor for a textbook from the largest medical publisher, Wiley, entitled “AI in Clinical Medicine”.
